Home / AIWON Bond

Three millimetres that hold the wall together.

AIWON Bond is a ready-mixed jointing mortar of cement, graded dry sand and imported modified polymers, made for AIWON blocks. It goes on 2–3 mm thick, needs no water curing, and leaves a wall that is stronger at the joint and with no gaps for heat to slip through.

A 3 mm AIWON Bond joint between two AIWON blocks

Both drawn at the same scale. Nearly a fifth of a brick wall’s face is mortar; in an AIWON wall it is one-fiftieth.

Why thin matters

A thick sand-cement joint is the weakest, wettest and warmest part of a wall. It shrinks and cracks, it soaks up water, and it carries heat straight through the insulation the block gives you.

Mortar
About 80% less mortar than a 10–15 mm joint.
Heat
No thick joints to act as heat bridges.
Water
Thin, dense joints keep moisture out.
Time
No water curing — build on, and plaster after 24 hours.

Use it for

Laying and jointing AAC, CLC, light-weight and cellular concrete blocks, inside and outside, and jointing concrete window and door frames. Grey powder in 40 kg bags.

What it gives the wall

High bond strength between blocks, no shrinkage cracks, better compressive and tensile strength of the wall, flexibility under shock and impact, and good thermal insulation. Brickcem’s Superbond technology keeps every bag the same.

On site, in order

From the site execution protocol we give every mason. Tools: water, an electric stirrer, a trowel and a notched trowel — and a rubber mallet.

Mix

  1. Water firstPour 10–12 litres of clean water into the tub for one 40 kg bag.
  2. Then the powderAdd AIWON Bond to the water, never water to the powder — that is what keeps it free of lumps.
  3. StirMix with a slow electric stirrer until smooth.
  4. Rest, then remixLeave it 2–3 minutes for the polymers to work, then stir briefly. Use within 1.5–2 hours.

Lay

  1. Clean and dampenBrush the block face clean and lightly damp with a wet brush. Moist, not dripping — do not soak.
  2. Notched trowel onlySpread a uniform 2–3 mm bed with the notched trowel so the whole face is covered.
  3. Place and tapSet the next block and adjust it with a rubber mallet within 10 minutes.
  4. Check the lineKeep the courses level and the wall plumb as you go.

Three things never to do

No water curing
AIWON Bond cures itself. Water weakens it.
No thick joints
Joints over 5 mm cause heat bridges and cracks.
No bone-dry blocks
A dry block sucks the water out of the mortar and the bond fails.

If something goes wrong

Mortar drying too fast
The blocks are too dry. Dampen them more.
Blocks sliding
The mix is too wet. Add a little powder.
Joints cracking
Uneven thickness. Switch to the notched trowel.
